NHL Home / Away Statistics

http://www.dailyfaceoff.com/22066/split-stats-the-nhl%e2%80%99s-biggest-home-and-away-dichotomies

This is an interesting article on the discrepency between NHL teams and how they perform at home versus on the road. Including a complete ranking of all NHL teams beginning with the teams that perform best at home and ending with teams that perform best on the road. Either way its an interesting read and worth a peak if you cap the NHL on a regular basis.

Another Slow Monday

Posted Betting Record: 19 - 11 - 0

Another pretty slow Monday on the betting front and I will have a pretty small card for tonights action. The Monday nighter in the NFL has less appeal then a week old sandwich and the NHL's 5 matchups are nothing to get excited about either. That being said there is always money to be made so lets take a look at an all Canadian matchup in the NHL

EDM Oilers +183 @ OTT Senators
Martin Gerber vs. Brian Elliot
This is just great value in my mind getting the Oilers at +183. The Oilers are a team I seem to be on quite a bit and love to play in the right spot as a dog. The price is way too steep with the Senators who have been nothing more than mediocre so far this season. As I have reiterated several times this Oilers teams is just loaded with young talent and have the capability of filling the net on any given night. This game kick starts a Eastern Canada road trip for the Oilers playing Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal over the next several days. With probably more than a third of their roster having been born in the area the boys will be fired up having family an friends in the stands. Gerber who returns to Ottawa where he spent 3 seasons will also be fired up for what is only his second start of the season. His first was a few nights ago where he lead the Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Av's making 35 saves along the way. I'm expecting the Oilers who seem to be starting to turn things around a little bit to start this road trip off on the right foot.

EDM Oilers ML +183 (Pinnacle Sports)

As always happy capping!

Grey Cup Recap

Well this years Grey Cup did not have the insane ending that last years did. However, it was still one of the better CFL games I watched this season. Odds makers originally hung the line at MON -7.0 but within seconds that was bet down and eventually closed at MON -3.5.  Regardless of the line, with the 21 - 18 Alouettes victory the Roughriders got the cover and Saskatchewan backers like myself cashed their tickets by the skin of their teeth.

Grey Cup MVP, and deservedly so, Jamel Richardson had 109 yards on 8 receptions including an incredible catch on a 37 yard hookup with Calvillo in the 4th Quarter setting up the winning TD.

One notable highlight from this game that is sure to make you cringe was a broken leg suffered by Leron Mitchell.

Turkey Day USA

While I am stuck at work for the better part of today I thought I would give you my thoughts on today's NFL action.

NE Patriots @ DET Lions +6.5
This game wreeks of a shootout. The Pats offence has averaged almost 29 points a game this season and the Lions are not far off that. Neither teams pass defence is anything to write home about and the Pats have several injuries on the defensive side of the ball. 50.5 may be a little rich for my blood but its tough to go under on this play. As for a side in this game at -6.5 i'm gonna have to lean to the Pats but it wouldn't suprise me if the Lions were right there in the 4th Q.

NE Patriots -6.5 -110 (Bowmans)
OVER 50.5 -110 (Bowmans)

NO Saints @ DAL Cowboys +3.5
The boy's have seemed to turn it around since the firing of Wade Phillips with B2B wins and B2B covers. If this game took place 3 weeks ago this line is closer to -7. I don't think I can touch the total on this game cause 50 points is a little much for me. As for the side I'll have to lean to the Saints.  The Cowboys caught a beat up Giants team who really didn't show up for that division matchup, 2 or 3 big plays made that game what it was.

NO Saints -3.5 -110 (Bowmans)

CIN Bengals @ NY Jets -10.0
By the way these two teams have performed this year and judging by their records yes this should be a 10 point spread. In my opinion its a much closer game than that. FACT: the Jets do not blow teams out. If Palmer and dumb and dumber can hook up for a couple big plays the jungle cats should be right there come the 4th quarter. The Bengals have struggled on both sides of the ball this season and need Cedric Benson to be more productive running the ball to better free up their key recievers.

CIN Bengals +10 -110 (Bowmans)

Open Ice Hits

In my opinion there is nothing more exciting then a nice open ice hit... however with all the rules in the NHL these days it the open ice hit has almost become extinct. Even as the players equimpment gets better and better the rules are continuing to take the physicality out of the game. No longer are the days of Scott Stevens molesting centremen as they enter the attacking zone.

The reason I bring this up is because last night Marc Staal layed a hit on Matt Stajan that resembled Stevens hit on Lindros in the 1999 -00 playoffs. Stajan came over the blue line and feathered a pass over to Mark Giordano and while admiring the play just got leveled.

With all the rules in the NHL today it seems like any big hit breaks one rule or another and warrants a penalty or a suspension. Blindside hits, head shots, charging, intent to injure all these ambiguous rules are aiding in the extinction of good solid bodychecks.

Here is the video of Marc Staal last night on Stajan.

LA / OTTAWA OVER

First and foremost anyone who was on LA last night or the over like me is probably pretty pissed off at NHL officiating. First of all how can you call off a goal because the net is off when Carkner blatantly grabs the post and rips it off its moorings. The rules state that if the official deems that the puck would have entered the net had the net been in position they have the right to rule it a goal.  Then with just seconds left in the game LA scores on what isn’t even close to a high stick however the idiot on the ice rules it a high stick and after spending what seemed to be roughly 2 hours reviewing it of course there was no conclusive evidence to overturn it.  If you saw the highlights you will know what I’m talking about.

Tuesday's Tips

11-6-0 posted NHL record

ATL Thrashers/ OTT Senators OVER 5.5 -123
ATL Thrashers ML +140
Mason vs. Elliot
We all know what kind of team the Thrashers are end to end hockey lots of shots usually more against than for. 10-4 to the over this season the Thrashers have givin up an average of almost 39 shots per game over the L10. Take into consideration Mason and his 3.45 GAA and this game sticks of a blowout right?... WRONG!  Although Mason's GAA is garbage the Thrashers are 6-4-1-0 infront of him and his SV% is actually better than Elliot's. The Sen's have been on a tear lately if you can call it that squeeking out wins against a few struggling teams in MTL, NYI, and TOR. The Sens D is sloppy and I will be taking the OVER and the value with ATL tonight.

TOR Maple Leafs/ TB Lightning OVER 5.5 +109
JS Giguere vs. Ellis
Plus money at 5.5 is good enough for me... But seriously, TB is 8-5 to the over this season and while struggling lately to find the net they have also been playing some solid defensive teams. The Leafs on the other hand after starting the season hot have gone on a ugly 1-8 spiral. More recently have been starting to find the net again. These two teams have historically played pretty close games and I'll be cheering for a 3-3 game come the thrid period. A total that historically would be 6 juiced to the over ill take my chances here. If the leafs drop this one tonight look at taking them in FLA tomorrow, they often dont loose both games of a FLA/TB roadtrip.

CAL Flames ML +110
Kipper vs Budaj
There are lots of trends to take into consideration in this game but I will get to those in a moment. The Flames have dropped 4 straight against some of the leagues best teams. Most recently a 2-1 loss in Minny on a 3rd period goal by Havlat. Attitudes changed noticably in the dressing room after that game in Minny and the Flames are going to be fired up for this one. As mentioned earlier there are a couple trends to take into consideration in this affair the road team in this series is 6-1 in the L7 but even more impresssive the underdog is 10-1 in the L11 matchups. Tough to look past these trends.

As always happy capping!
